Ingredients

  • For the Wontons:
  • 50 wonton wrappers
  • ½ lb ground pork or chicken
  • ¼ lb shrimp finely chopped
  • 2 green onions finely chopped
  • 2 tsp soy sauce
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • 1 tsp ginger minced
  • 1 garlic clove minced
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp white pepper
  • For the Soup:
  • 8 cups chicken or vegetable broth
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • 2 cups baby bok choy chopped
  • 1 cup mushrooms sliced (optional)
  • 2 green onions chopped (for garnish)
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Equipment

  • Mixing bowl
  • Small bowl of water (for sealing wontons)
  • Large pot
  • Slotted spoon
  • Ladle

Method

  1. Make the Wontons:
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine ground meat, shrimp, green onions, soy sauce, sesame oil, ginger, garlic, salt, and white pepper. Mix until well combined.
  3. Place a wonton wrapper on a clean surface. Add 1 teaspoon of the filling in the center.
  4. Dip your finger in water and moisten the edges of the wrapper. Fold the wrapper into a triangle, pressing to seal. Then, bring the two bottom corners together and pinch to seal.
  5. Repeat with the remaining wrappers and filling.
  6. Prepare the Broth:
  7. In a large pot, bring the broth to a simmer. Add the soy sauce and sesame oil for flavor.
  8. Stir in the bok choy and mushrooms (if using). Let simmer gently while you cook the wontons.
  9. Cook the Wontons:
  10. Bring a separate pot of water to a boil. Add the wontons in batches, ensuring they don’t stick together.
  11. Cook for 4–5 minutes, or until the wontons float to the top. Use a slotted spoon to transfer them to the simmering broth.
  12. Serve:
  13. Ladle the soup into bowls, making sure to include wontons and vegetables.
  14. Garnish with chopped green onions and serve immediately.

Notes

Seal Properly: Ensure wonton edges are sealed tightly to prevent them from opening while cooking.
Customize Filling: Add finely chopped water chestnuts or carrots for extra texture.
