Equipment

  • Mixing bowl
  • Small bowl of water (for sealing wontons)
  • Large pot
  • Slotted spoon
  • Ladle

Ingredients

  • For the Wontons:
  • 50 wonton wrappers
  • ½ lb ground pork or chicken
  • ¼ lb shrimp finely chopped
  • 2 green onions finely chopped
  • 2 tsp soy sauce
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • 1 tsp ginger minced
  • 1 garlic clove minced
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp white pepper
  • For the Soup:
  • 8 cups chicken or vegetable broth
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • 2 cups baby bok choy chopped
  • 1 cup mushrooms sliced (optional)
  • 2 green onions chopped (for garnish)
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  • Make the Wontons:
  • In a mixing bowl, combine ground meat, shrimp, green onions, soy sauce, sesame oil, ginger, garlic, salt, and white pepper. Mix until well combined.
  • Place a wonton wrapper on a clean surface. Add 1 teaspoon of the filling in the center.
  • Dip your finger in water and moisten the edges of the wrapper. Fold the wrapper into a triangle, pressing to seal. Then, bring the two bottom corners together and pinch to seal.
  • Repeat with the remaining wrappers and filling.
  • Prepare the Broth:
  • In a large pot, bring the broth to a simmer. Add the soy sauce and sesame oil for flavor.
  • Stir in the bok choy and mushrooms (if using). Let simmer gently while you cook the wontons.
  • Cook the Wontons:
  • Bring a separate pot of water to a boil. Add the wontons in batches, ensuring they don’t stick together.
  • Cook for 4–5 minutes, or until the wontons float to the top. Use a slotted spoon to transfer them to the simmering broth.
  • Serve:
  • Ladle the soup into bowls, making sure to include wontons and vegetables.
  • Garnish with chopped green onions and serve immediately.

Notes

Seal Properly: Ensure wonton edges are sealed tightly to prevent them from opening while cooking.
Customize Filling: Add finely chopped water chestnuts or carrots for extra texture.
