Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 green bell pepper diced
  • 1 small onion diced
  • 2 garlic cloves minced
  • 1 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch mixed with 2 tbsp water for slurry
  • 1 tsp olive oil
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 6 slices provolone cheese
  • 4 –6 hamburger buns toasted

Equipment

  • Large skillet
  • Wooden spoon or spatula
  • Small bowl
  • Baking sheet (for toasting buns, optional)

Method

  1. Cook the Beef and Vegetables:
  2. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef and cook, breaking it up with a wooden spoon, until browned and cooked through. Drain excess fat if necessary.
  3. Add the bell pepper, onion, and garlic to the skillet. Sauté until the vegetables are softened, about 4–5 minutes.
  4. Make the Sauce:
  5. Stir in the ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, and beef broth. Simmer for 2–3 minutes.
  6. Add the cornstarch slurry to the skillet and stir until the mixture thickens. Season with salt and pepper.
  7. Add the Cheese:
  8. Lower the heat to medium-low. Lay the provolone cheese slices over the beef mixture. Cover the skillet and let the cheese melt, about 1–2 minutes. Stir to combine the melted cheese into the beef mixture.
  9. Assemble the Sloppy Joes:
  10. Toast the buns on a baking sheet in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for 3–5 minutes or until golden.
  11. Spoon the cheesy beef mixture onto the bottom halves of the buns. Top with the other halves and serve immediately.

Notes

Extra Toppings: Add sautéed mushrooms or banana peppers for extra flavor.
Cheese Options: Swap provolone for American, mozzarella, or cheddar cheese.
