Kitchen Equipment Needed:

  • Large skillet or wok
  • Wooden spoon or spatula
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Knife and cutting board
  • Small mixing bowl
  • Whisk

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1/2 cup low-sodium soy sauce
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, grated
  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional, for spice)
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1/4 cup green onions, chopped (for garnish)
  • 2 tablespoons sesame oil or vegetable oil
  • Cooked rice or noodles, for serving

Directions:

  1. Cook the Ground Beef:
    • Heat a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add the sesame oil or vegetable oil.
    • Once the oil is hot, add the ground beef. Cook the beef, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon, until browned and fully cooked through, about 5-7 minutes. Drain any excess fat.
  2. Prepare the Sauce:
    • In a small mixing bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, brown sugar, minced garlic, grated ginger, and red pepper flakes (if using).
    • In a separate small bowl, mix the cornstarch with water to create a slurry. Add this to the soy sauce mixture and stir well.
  3. Combine and Simmer:
    • Pour the sauce mixture into the skillet with the browned ground beef. Stir to combine and coat the beef evenly with the sauce.
    • Allow the mixture to simmer for 2-3 minutes, or until the sauce has thickened and clings to the beef.
  4. Serve:
    • Remove the skillet from heat and sprinkle the chopped green onions over the top for garnish.
    • Serve the Mongolian Ground Beef over a bed of steamed rice or noodles. Enjoy the dish hot, with additional green onions if desired.
