Creamed Chipped Beef on Toast

Introduction: Creamed Chipped Beef on Toast is a classic comfort dish that’s rich, creamy, and full of nostalgic flavors. This traditional recipe combines thinly sliced, dried beef with a velvety white sauce, all served over crisp, buttery toast.

Equipment

  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Knife and cutting board
  • Toaster or toaster oven
  • Large spoon or spatula

Ingredients

  • 8 oz dried beef sliced thin
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 4 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 4 cups whole milk
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon paprika optional, for garnish
  • 8 slices of bread white, wheat, or your choice, toasted

Instructions

  • Rinse the dried beef under cold water to remove excess salt. Pat it dry with a paper towel.
  • Slice the beef into thin strips or bite-sized pieces. Set aside.
  • Make the Cream Sauce:
  • In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Once melted, stir in the flour to form a roux. Cook the roux for 1-2 minutes, stirring constantly, until it is lightly golden and bubbly.
  • Gradually whisk in the milk, continuing to whisk until the mixture is smooth and free of lumps. Increase the heat to medium-high and cook the sauce, stirring constantly, until it thickens, about 5-7 minutes.
  • Add the sliced beef to the cream sauce and stir to combine. Reduce the heat to low and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together.
  • Prepare the Toast:
  • While the sauce is cooking, toast the bread slices until they are golden and crispy.
  • Serve:
  • Spoon the creamed chipped beef over the toasted bread. Sprinkle with black pepper and, if desired, a pinch of paprika for a touch of color and flavor.
  • Serve immediately, hot and delicious.
