Homemade Stromboli

Homemade Stromboli is a delicious and customizable Italian-American dish filled with savory ingredients like cheese, meats, and vegetables, all wrapped in golden, crispy dough. It's essentially a rolled-up pizza, perfect for a family dinner or a fun, shareable appetizer.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb pizza dough store-bought or homemade
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup sliced pepperoni or salami
  • 1/2 cup cooked sausage optional
  • 1/4 cup chopped bell peppers optional
  • 1/4 cup chopped onions optional
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp dried oregano
  • 1/2 tsp dried basil
  • 1 egg beaten (for egg wash)
  • Olive oil for brushing
  • Marinara sauce for dipping optional

Instructions

  • Prepare the Pizza Dough
  • Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  • Roll out the pizza dough on a floured surface into a rectangle, about 12x10 inches.
  • Assemble the Stromboli
  • Sprinkle the shredded mozzarella cheese evenly over the dough, leaving a border around the edges.
  • Layer your meats (pepperoni, salami, and sausage) on top of the cheese. Add any vegetables you’d like, such as bell peppers and onions.
  • Sprinkle garlic powder, oregano, and basil evenly over the top for flavor.
  • Roll the Stromboli
  • Starting from one long edge, carefully roll the dough up into a log shape, making sure to pinch the edges tightly to seal in the fillings.
  • Place the stromboli seam-side down on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  • Prepare for Baking
  • Brush the top of the stromboli with a beaten egg to give it a golden, shiny crust.
  • Optional: Use a sharp knife or pizza cutter to make a few diagonal slashes on top to allow steam to escape while baking.
  • Bake the Stromboli
  • Place the stromboli in the preheated oven and bake for 20-25 minutes or until the crust is golden brown and the cheese is melted inside.
  • Serve
  • Let the stromboli cool for a few minutes before slicing it into individual portions. Serve with marinara sauce on the side for dipping if desired.
