Method
- Assemble the Sandwiches:
- Lay out the slices of bread. On four slices, place a slice of Swiss cheese, followed by a slice of turkey and a slice of ham. Top with another slice of cheese and then the remaining slices of bread. Press down gently to keep the sandwiches together.
- Prepare the Batter:
- In a mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, Dijon mustard (if using), vanilla extract (if using), salt, and pepper until well combined.
- Dip the Sandwiches:
- Carefully dip each sandwich into the egg mixture, turning to coat both sides evenly. Let any excess egg mixture drip off.
- Cook the Sandwiches:
- Heat the butter in a large skillet or griddle over medium heat until melted and bubbling.
- Place the dipped sandwiches onto the skillet and cook for 3-4 minutes on each side, or until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted. You may need to cook the sandwiches in batches, depending on the size of your skillet.
- Serve:
- Once cooked, remove the sandwiches from the skillet and let them cool slightly. Slice each sandwich in half diagonally.
- Dust the tops with powdered sugar and serve immediately with raspberry or strawberry jam for dipping.
Notes
Bread Choice: Using a slightly sweet bread like brioche or challah enhances the contrast between the savory and sweet elements of the sandwich.
For Crispier Sandwiches: After cooking, you can place the sandwiches on a baking sheet and finish them in a 350°F (175°C) oven for 5-7 minutes to crisp them up even more.
Customize Fillings: Feel free to experiment with different types of cheese or add a smear of mustard or mayonnaise inside the sandwich for extra flavor.
